INDUSTRIAL MINERALS

Gypsum & anhydrite

Alberta's best gypsum sits inside Wood Buffalo National Park; the rest is small or in forest reserves.

Peace Point in Wood Buffalo National Park exposes 3–15 m gypsum beds that are off-limits, a 2.6 Mt deposit west of Grande Cache grades 75–80 % gypsum, and Kananaskis and Head Creek deposits sit in the Bow River forest reserve. No gypsum is mined in Alberta; wallboard plants import rock and synthetic FGD gypsum is declining with coal retirements.

GEOLOGY: WHAT MAKES A DEPOSIT MORE LIKELY

Marine evaporite gypsum / anhydrite at or near surface where Devonian evaporites outcrop.

Favourable conditions

  • Hydrated (gypsum, not anhydrite) beds over 5 m
  • Outside parks and forest reserves
  • Within trucking distance of a wallboard plant
