Alberta geothermal map

Well-derived subsurface temperatures from the AGS geothermal model, the Granite Wash aquifer extent from the Geothermal Atlas of Alberta, live geothermal leases and every geothermal project the Atlas tracks.

Gradients average 33 °C/km and exceed 36 °C/km in the Hinton–Edson deep basin. The Leduc Formation alone holds about 4 trillion GJ of heat in place.

QUESTIONS THIS MAP ANSWERS

Frequently asked

Does Alberta have geothermal potential?
Yes. The AGS estimates 66 GW of gross thermal and about 9 GW of gross electrical potential in the Leduc Formation alone. The obstacle is cost: the AER puts geothermal power at C$236–278/MWh against a 2025 pool price near C$44. More
