Lithium (oilfield brines)

82.5 Mt LCE in place in Devonian reef brines — the largest lithium resource statement in Canada, waiting on DLE economics.

The AGS puts 82.5 Mt of lithium carbonate equivalent in place in Leduc and Swan Hills formation water above a 50 mg/L cut-off, 62 Mt of it already under lease. E3 Lithium's Clearwater project (16.2 Mt LCE measured and indicated at 75.5 mg/L) commissioned its second demonstration phase in June 2026 and targets 12 kt/yr of lithium carbonate from 2028/29. Direct lithium extraction from hot, already-produced brines is the technology bet; price and an unsettled brine royalty are the risks.

GEOLOGY: WHAT MAKES A DEPOSIT MORE LIKELY

Lithium enriched in hot, saline Devonian carbonate formation water; recovered by direct lithium extraction (sorbent / ion exchange) from re-entered or purpose-drilled wells with brine reinjection.

What the forecasts say

Key risks

  • Lithium price cycle
  • DLE reagent and energy cost at scale
  • Aquifer pressure management and reinjection
  • Royalty uncertainty
  • Pore-space priority vs CO2 storage

DEVELOPMENT: TENURE, ROYALTY, PERMITTING

What a developer needs to know

Tenure
Brine-hosted mineral lease: 10-year initial term, indefinite while producing, $3.50/ha rent, minimum bonus $10/ha; brine-hosted licence for exploration.
Royalty
No Alberta brine-lithium royalty rate set as of Oct 2026 (lease-by-lease pending regulation; salt royalty of $0.45/t may apply to minerals recovered in salt form). New minerals investment incentive announced Mar 2026 for 2027.
Lead time
3–4 years from feasibility to first carbonate

Permitting path

  1. AER Directive 090 (brine-hosted minerals) and Brine-Hosted Mineral Resource Development Rules (Mar 2023)
  2. Directive 056 facility licence (E3 filed 2026)
  3. EPEA approval for the processing plant
  4. Water Act for make-up water

Infrastructure needs

  • Brine production and reinjection wells
  • DLE plant and conversion
  • Reagent supply (soda ash, sulphuric acid)
  • Rail to cathode makers

Active players

Recommended next steps

  • Sample Nisku, Wabamun and Keg River brines to extend the resource
  • Fix the royalty regime
  • Overlay CCS evaluation areas on brine leases to pre-empt conflicts
