INDUSTRIAL MINERALS

Peat (horticultural)

A fifth of Canada's horticultural peat, mostly exported to US growers.

Alberta supplies about 17 % of Canadian peat (around C$69 M of sales in 2013) from under 1,000 ha of harvested bog, 80 % of it exported. Sun Gro's Seba Beach and Vilna sites and the new Julius Lake West bog (harvest 2024/25–2038) are the main operations. Carbon-stock and wetland policy, not resource, limit new leases.

POTENTIAL & KNOWN RESERVES IN ALBERTA

Alberta ≈17 % of Canadian peat; <1,000 ha harvested; vast boreal peatlands

  • Vilna
  • Julius Lake West
  • Wandering River
  • Boreal peatlands north of 55° N

GEOLOGY: WHAT MAKES A DEPOSIT MORE LIKELY

Ombrotrophic sphagnum bogs 1–5 m thick on poorly drained boreal plains.

Host formations
Holocene sphagnum bog and fen peat
Depth range
0–5 m

Favourable conditions

  • Low-humification sphagnum peat over 1.5 m
  • Road access and drainage feasibility
  • Outside wetland-policy no-go classes

What a developer needs to know

Tenure
Public Lands Act surface material lease (peat is a surface material, not a Mines and Minerals Act mineral).
Royalty
Public Lands surface material royalty.
Lead time

Permitting path

  1. EPEA approval / Code of Practice
  2. Water Act for drainage
  3. Wetland policy replacement
