INDUSTRIAL MINERALS

Sodium sulphate & saline-lake evaporites

Metiskow produced from 1969 until demand vanished; Saskatchewan's lakes now own the market.

Playa lakes in east-central Alberta (Metiskow / Horseshoe Lake) precipitate mirabilite that was solution-mined from 1969 until the plant closed; a late-1990s restart failed and there has been no demand for decades. Saskatchewan's Chaplin operation supplies the detergent and pulp markets at about US$78/t.

POTENTIAL & KNOWN RESERVES IN ALBERTA

Confidence: Inferred

Where it occurs

  • Metiskow / Horseshoe Lake
  • Other closed-basin lakes in east-central Alberta

GEOLOGY: WHAT MAKES A DEPOSIT MORE LIKELY

Mirabilite / thenardite beds in closed glacial basins over sulphate-rich till in a semi-arid climate.

Host formations
Holocene playa-lake evaporites
Depth range
0–20 m

Favourable conditions

  • Closed drainage, high evaporation
  • Permanent crystal beds in the largest lakes
